How to write an effective tagline for your business

How to write an effective tagline for your business?

I came across an entertaining post on Huffington Post about fake slogans that make more sense than the real ones. It will sure to give you a few laugh out loud moments. All jokes aside, it got me thinking what makes a great a slogan / tagline?

A slogan, or tagline summarizes what your business is all about in a few words. There are a few characteristics of a great tagline:

1. It is short and sweet

Nike’s “Just do it” , and Apple’s “Think Different” are great because they are short and memorable. Taglines are usually less than 8 words or so it is easy to remember. It fits nicely along with the logo without getting too wordy.

2. It tells the company’s advantage

Zappos’ “Powered by service” and BMW’s “The ultimate driving machine” tells you the companies advantage over the others. The tagline should give your customer the first impression what your company is all about, so if you have something that is better than your competitors, it should be in your tagline.

3. It is about goals and big picture

Nokia’s “Connecting People” and Office Depot’s “Taking care of business” are straightforward about what these businesses main goals and functions are. Slogans do not have to be fancy and catchy. Example for small business – Logo design in 24 hours, Your plumbing at a phone call away.

When you are ready for your own tagline, try Marcia Yudkin’s tagline generator. Marcia has designed an excellent 19-step plan to help you get through this process, take your time to read it through.
