How to design a logo for promotional products

How to design a logo for promotional products?  This is one of the most popular question asked by our customers.

An effective promotional products campaign starts with a well designed logo, and If you are starting a new business or going through re-branding, one of the most important decisions is logo design.

Will it be memorable? Will it have an impact?

Promotional items are great marketing tool to increase the brand awareness and build loyalty for your company, therefore the products can be used for both your customers and internally. You can mail them out, as a client appreciation gift, pass them out at trade show, or as an add on incentive to purchase your products or services.

However, many companies have failed to realize that not all logo designs look good on all promotional products, or were surprised by the setup costs to print their multi-color logo. Below are some useful tips for designing a logo for promotional products.

How should I design my logo?

Sample branding guide

As business owner or marketing coordinator, your company logo will be printed over and over on different mediums. The cost of printing is directly correlated with the logo design. Generally speaking business printing is divided into 2 categories: full color offset printing (think postcards), silkscreen printing (think T-shirts, promotional products).

In full color printing, any designs will cost pretty much the same to print, however when it comes to silkscreen printing, more colors in the logo or design will drive up the costs. Many corporate branding guides will include a one color logo version for situations where printing the logo in all its colors is not possible.

Another aspect to consider is the physical imprint area of the promotional item, and make sure your logo is formatted for different sized items.  small version logo for shaped logo for pens, sunglasses, medium version for branded T-shirt or Tote bag, large version for outdoor tent and backdrop. There should also be stacked, non-stacked, single color, full color versions to fit all printing needs.  All of these details should be included in the corporate branding guide.

Logo formats for different promo merchandise. It is important to design the logo in proper format.

What format should my logo be in?

When designing a logo for promotional products, you need to have the logo set up for CMYK, RGB & pantone use

Firstly, logos should always be designed in vector format, and color of the logo should be defined in PantoneCMYK and RGB colors based on different applications. Secondly, when used on website, social media or apps, convert the logo to JPG, PNG and GIF.
