Dan Hansen from DG Collision Center runs a successful auto body shop in Covina, California.  He started as an apprentice at a very young age and became an expert in car refinishing, he is known as “Dan Gogh” within the industry.

Team Building

  • Make sure everyone is well trained for what he or she needs to perform on the job, and give suggestions on how to improve
  • Let employees know whenever they are doing a good job
  • Show appreciation as much as possible, by simply thanking the employees, team lunch, company gifts

Dealing with a “High Maintenance” customers

Similar to our previous guest customer service expert Vivian Campbell, Dan thinks there is no such thing as “High Maintenance” customers.  Problems with customer starts with poor communications.  Here are some great tips:

  • Identify all the customer’s needs (make a list if necessary), and address them one by one
  • Define the customer’s expectation
  • Provide options and let the customer choose what they wish to do
  • Communicate, communicate, and communicate!

Marketing Tips

Dan thinks social media marketing is working out best for his business. He likes Facebook Group especially because it is more personable and this local marketing technique gives potential customers a chance get to know him. He also loves to attend local chamber of commerce and networking group such as BNI (which we are also a part of) to network. He’s also an active member of his neighborhood where he frequently attends volunteers and attend community events. Being involved and active in your local community is a great channel for marketing your local small business.

Running a Successful Auto Body Business

Lastly, Dan concludes with a few helpful tips on running a successful auto body business, but we also find that his tips work for all general business! He maintains a standard procedure manual. This makes sure that everyone on the team is well informed on workflow and procedures on various parts of the company. Having a procedure manual also helps maintain a consistent level of service, as all services procedures and results are clearly defined so it’s never a guessing game. His number one goal for his company is to always provide an excellent experience, no matter the job is big or small. Combining with his marketing and team building techniques, his business is definitely on its way to more success in the future!
